Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar – A Legend

DR BHIMRAO AMBEDKAR
Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was not only the Dalit Massiha but he was one of the famous leaders of national freedom movement. Social justice and human rights ideals in his practical approach of struggle raised him above most of the leaders at that time. He had a special space in the society. He had multi- dimentional qualities and credit of amazing achievements which made him a great social reformist, philosopher and legend in law affairs etc. His personality and ideology were deeply influenced by Gautam Budh, Sant Kabir and Mahatama Jyotiba Phulle. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar held a very strong view that the left out tasks which Mahatama Jyotiba Phulle started should be completed. In addition to these influences he was impressed by Western Countries system of development and radical changes happening in those societies. That is why he supported the ideas of- Liberty, equality and brotherhood. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar wanted to build future Indian society based upon these human values.

In Indian context, to fight against untouchablity and for equality of all was a very challenging task. The attitudes of disappointment amongst dalits were very deep rooted because of their social, economical and political exploitation from the centuries together .Because of these considerations, it was very challenging to motivate them to stand up to fight against their exploitation and for their self respect. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar spent his whole life in this challenging task relentlessly. Dalits as other part of Indian society were themselves divided in to many castes and sub castes because of ignorance, backwardness and given social structure. According to Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar the caste system in India has been a divisive instrument from the very begining . He had a firm view that till this caste system continues, the outcastes liberation is not possible. This was the reason that he started a strong movement against caste system. To fight against the disparities in society and discrimination against dalits, he felt a need of cultural revolution and called the out caste people to come forward, get education, get united and fight against injustice. He also motivated them not to wait for someone to come for their rescue but to fight against this slavery themselves.

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was a great social reformer.

But only a social reformist. In fact he was unable to understand the basic cause behind the caste oppression.

Thanks for your comments
He understood the cause in terms that the exploitation of Dalits has a caste and class both angles and that is why he fought against caste system eradication.

I doubt if Dr Ambedkar had any class based understanding of caste system. No doubt he fought against the caste system but he could not address the grass root problem. The basic problem was the justification of caste system as system made by God for regularizing the society. For negating this idea he had to go against the people’s faith. He couldn’t contradict firmly and scientifically the idea of God behind the caste system.

Dr Ambedkar’s struggle against caste oppression in India is relatively more scientific. His approach was down to earth. He went deeper and deeper in criticizing and evaluating the Hindu religion which provided cultural and social basis to the caste system in India. That is why his contribution matters a lot. No doubt, he was not an atheist, but, he was not a victim of blind faith. He shifted to Buddhism which is again relatively human and provides a basis for a caste-less society. Ambedkar’s ideas about economy also reveal that he was in the favor of promoting the public sector, co-operatives and up to some extent, he favored control of masses on the resources of the state. Although he was the advocate of a Mixed economy, but, he always fought for the rights of the common workers. In fact, social revolution was his foremost priority that would lead to a caste-less and class-less society. Thus, he was a real champion of interests of the poor, that also included their economic uplift.

No dout that he could not see things purely on class angle, but even then his contribution was great.

No doubt he fought against the caste oppression but he was not able to attack the mythological believes of caste system. In fact caste system is still prevailing because no political party and social reformer have directly confronted the myths. Rather than questioning the authenticity of these believes Ambedkar changed his religion. The atheists have been able to raise this issue to some extent. Kerala was the most caste affected state but due to concerted efforts of progressive people, caste discrimination is almost negligible in Kerala.
