Nukkar natak, or street plays certainly have a big impact on the psyche of people who or ordinarily not exposed to thought processes other than what is prevelant in their nick of the woods.

But to think that a bunch of metro 20-somethings in jeans and kurtas going to a village and churning out some rather bookish and dated rhetoric is going to rid the society of evils like female foeticide, is actually quite foolhardy.

Maybe if they got local involvement like the ”Gulabi Gang” to preach these things, the lower stratas of the society might be able to identify more with them!

For our country man, Natak is the most vibrant medium of communication. It has reflected their tradition, social life and shaped way of life, and has shaped their thoughts, out look and culture down the years.

Thanks for the comments.

Asmitaji want to say on your comments.

These artists are not metro culture artists. They are from the villages and cities. They are from dalits, other weaker sections , students, unemployed youth and employees doing natak on voluntary bases. Not 15-20 in number, but at least 300-400 are these kalakrs from different districts of Haryana. Communication is needed for all sections of the society.

Street Theatre in Haryana was started by Jatan Natak Manch. That time it was a bunch of school and college students. Their convenor later on directed Hrayanvi movie Laado and critically acclaimed hindi movie Dhoop. Street theatre has always been a powerful medium and common man immediately associates with it. There have been statistical facts of street theater encouraging people to participate in the literacy campaign in Haryana.
