Rural Electricity in India

The Aim of the previous Govt. was : Every village to be provided electricity; remaining 1,25,000 villages to be covered by 2009; 2.3 crore below poverty- line households to be connected. HOW Much we could Perform?: By December 2008, only 17.95% of targeted rural households electrified. Of the targeted villages, only 52% electrified.

The actual number of households without electricity is about 8.4 crore. However, instead of the State Electricity Boards, the responsibility for all this now lies with a combination of undefined NGO’s, Panchayats and local franchises.

Bharat Nirman only provides the funds through the Rural Electrification Corporation. Without a physical institution, this motley crowd of agencies cannot be held accountable for failing to fulfill the promises of rural electrification.

The change of responsibility from the state utilities to undefined entities for rural electrification is the result of the electricity Act 2003, pushed through despite the Left’s opposition. In order to privatise distribution, the Act took loss making rural areas (with lower density of population and therefore higher cost of delivery) out of the responsibility of the new distribution companies.

The Left Parties have always insisted on changes in the Electricity Act to make rural electrification a state sector priority. Now the things will move in a different direction

This is indeed sad to see that many villages in India are still in dark and do not have electricity. Life must be tough for them. India as a country have to work on basic level before it thinks on higher level of technology and defense.

So many people of India are devoid of the basic facilities in their life. Things that we don't even think about, are a kind of dream for them. So much of difference in living standard in one country is weird.

Providing electricity to rural areas is a huge task. Governments after governments have promised electrification in rural households over several decades, but much remains to be desired.

The reason for this is that successive governments have had taken the enormity of the task lightly while presenting their cases or promising before the masses.

Unlike broadband Internet, electricity cannot be transmitted through wireless. It requires massive infrastructure. On top of it, production of electricity is a very resource consuming and complex task.

With rampant electricity theft, poor infrastructure, corruption, lack of resources, government apathy etc have had a telling effect on India’s electrification dream.

Just blaming the government will not help. There has to be a genuine urge within the rural population to the extent of making definitive decisions based on their priority for getting electricity when it comes to stamping the ballot, or pushing the key on the EVM. Only then, we can see a substantial change in the rural electricity scenario in our country.

Stop electricity theft and get 20% extra electricity to use.
